How to choose the right boxing gloves for your training

Hey, punchfitters!

Today we tackle one of the most frequently asked questions, what size boxing gloves should I buy? Whether you are new to boxing or old. It is important to get gloves of the right size for you. I am here to help you make the right choice.

Understanding your needs

Boxers and combat sports enthusiasts generally fall into one of three categories.

1. combat fitness,

2. Combat competitor

3. Combat fan.

Where you fit will guide you to the right gloves.

1. Fighting fitness enthusiasts

If you’re here to fit in, 16 oz gloves are your best friend.

It is ideal for college students, stay-at-home parents, working professionals and retirees.

These gloves provide enough padding to keep you safe and reduce the chance of injury when hitting the pads.

2. Battle of Competitors

Competitors are a different breed. They train six to seven days a week. These athletes prepare their bodies for the rigorous demands of the ring.

They usually use 10 to 8 oz gloves. This lightweight glove offers increased speed and accuracy. This is an important part of a combat setting.

3. Combat Fan

For those who enjoy a mix of fitness and competition without the intention of stepping into the ring, a multi-pronged approach is best.

If you fall into this category, buy your glove size based on your weight and height. This ensures you are equipped for both sparring sessions and heavy bag work.

My personal glove choice

When I do cardio on the heavy bag, I bring my 16 oz gloves. They are perfect for burning my arms.

However, when I’m training with a partner using focus mitts, tie pads, or sparring, I switch to a smaller glove of 10 or 12 oz.

When combat training requires quick transitions between weights, weapons and striking, I prefer open palm MMA gloves.
